Music of Remembrance's mission is to
remember Holocaust musicians and their art. In this program,
Seattle native Daniel Asia and New Yorker Steve Reich share the
bill. Using the poetry of Paul Pines, Asia's song cycle is imbued
with images of family and Judaism, and their intertwining. Reich's
landmark work juxtaposes sounds of the American trains he safely
rode as a privileged child with images of the German trains that
transported helpless people to death camps during the same
years.

The Magic Behind the Words and the Music
is You, so you want to sing a song! Well this is a class that will
help you take center stage! Broadway performer and award winning
recording artist Rebecca Spencer, most recently one of the stars of
Phantom-The Las Vegas Spectacular, will guide you to approach and
interpret your favorite Broadway song or a favorite song as a
soloist. Bring the sheet music for the song you think you already
know and we'll sing on the very first day. But also, tuck under
your arm a second song that you always wanted to learn or almost
know. Feel free to hold the music on the very first day. You are
all individuals and there is a way to approach learning a song that
will make it your very own! You will discover how to tell your own
story, by building a character closer to who you are. A vocal warm
up and physical musical movement warm up will start each day. At
the end of the week we'll present a showcase cabaret with everyone!
For ages 8 and up.

A two-part creative facilitation
training for young people ages 14-18, who are interested in leading
groups and organizing events using the arts. The first training
develops basic skills to use art to facilitate groups and provides
participants with "tool-box" of easy-to-lead art activities. The
second training will focus on specific leadership techniques like
active listing, presentation skills, and group facilitation and
will explore how to use these skills to move a group towards its
highest potential. The second training builds on the first
training, and it is highly recommended that participants come to
both!

Hugo Classes for Kids is a 10-week
after-school creative writing workshop for kids in 3rd-8th grades.
The theme for spring session is Writing to Save the World. Writers
are always saving things, changing things. We write on behalf of
things that can't speak -- animals facing extinction, trees being
cut down. We record events so that they won't be forgotten -- a
city destroyed by a hurricane, a grandparent's life story. In this
class we'll practice our powers of persuasion, putting our passion
on the page to save, to remember and to create our world.

Seattle Music Partners provides
after-school music lessons to elementary and middle school students
in underserved communities. Our mission is to help children learn
to play instruments and read music. To attain this goal, we recruit
accomplished high school and college-aged musicians to volunteer to
work with our students. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis in
one-on-one pairings or in small groups, and instruments are loaned
when needed. Students perform in several recitals each year,
showcasing their new skills and gaining valuable performance
experience. In addition, SMP works with area arts organizations to
bring nationally known musicians into the schools and to arrange
for field trips to music performances.
