Under the leadership of Dr. Goodloe-Johnson and with support from the City of Seattle, Seattle Public Schools has revitalized its commitment to arts education. Please join the SPS Visual and Performing Arts Department for the first District-wide review of arts learning and teaching in our schools. Key findings and recommendations are based on analysis of the data in five areas: arts instruction and activities; resources for arts teaching and activities; barriers to the arts; policy and assessment; and attitudes regarding the arts. The data and findings provide a high-level picture of arts instruction and access in SPS, with attention to issues of equity.

Two meetings have been scheduled to address specific stakeholders. Meetings will occur at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence, Room 2700 at 2445 3rd Avenue South and refreshments will be served

  • April 6, 2009, 6:30 - 7:30 PM - SPS Families, Educators, and Administrators
  • April 7, 2009, 6:30 - 7:30 PM - Arts Organizations and Teaching Artists
Subsequent meetings will be announced for community arts organization representatives to meet by discipline (visual arts, music, theatre and dance) to network and discuss the points at which their work most effectively intersects with the school district's goals.

Finding the Right Program for You

Listings of programs, events and activities in the Arts eNews does not equate to an endorsement by the Seattle Public Schools. We encourage all potential program participants to assess how each listing meets their needs, especially when establishing long term partnerships. If you would like assistance in matching right program for your school's or studets's needs, please feel to contact Community Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen kpallen@seattleschools.org. Specific questions about the programs, however, should be addressed directly to the sponsoring arts organization that has provided SPS with program information.

Each month we also feature a partnership between an arts organization and a school or schools that exemplifies a collaborative and sustained effort to enhance student and educator learning in the arts. This month we highlight a growing partnership between Seattle International Children's Festival and the SPS international schools.

Featured Partnership
International Arts Consortium

The International Arts Consortium (IAC) is a partnership between the Seattle International Children's Festival and Seattle's international schools: John Stanford Elementary School, Hamilton Middle School, and Beacon Hill Elementary, with plans to add Concord Elementary School and Denny Middle School this fall. The mission of the consortium is to give students both in-classroom and out-of-classroom experiences with international performances and art. The consortium brings skilled teaching artists of diverse heritage or training into the international schools and offers opportunities for teachers to be mentored as arts educators. The partnership between the schools and SICF began in 2000 with the opening of John Stanford International School. Together, the partners advocate for international arts, along with language immersion and world cultures study, as integral to the mission of an International School. Staff at each school serve on committees which steer the activities of the consortium program.

About International Children's Festival
Seattle International Children's Festival features performances by professional artists from around the world for K-12 students and their families. At Seattle Center, May 12 - 16, 2009, this year's lineup features music, circus arts, puppetry, and theatre from Belgium, Canada, Germany, India, USA, and Zimbabwe. May 14 is World Languages Day with performances in English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Free hands-on Discovery Centers enliven the festival grounds. Seattle International Children's Festival also offers professional development workshops for teachers. SPS Community Invited to hear National Education Leaders Speak at Lecture Series on Arts Community / School Partnerships

Promise and Problems: What are the difficulties and benefits of joint work?
Thursday, March 19, 2009
7:00pm-8:30pm, Seattle Art Museum downtown

Across the nation, arts organizations and schools are working together to teach the arts, enliven the learning of other subjects through the arts, and strengthen school communities. Arts, education and philanthropy consultant Hollis Hedrick investigates how arts organizations can help meet the needs of students in our schools. Drawing on local and national examples, Hedrick discusses the promise of collaborative work and the obstacles that must be overcome to make this work succeed. Join Hollis in an engaging conversation about policy incentives for the arts, program design, funding sources, professional development, assessment, and public engagement efforts. Hollis Hedrick was the director of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, founder of the Center for Arts Education in New York City, and past director of the Arts in Education Program at the New York. For more information about this talk and others in this lecture series presented by Seattle Art Museum, visit: http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/calendar/calendar.asp?month=2&day=19&year=2009.

SPS Central Office Seeks Student Artwork for Display

Any school staff or parent volunteer can drop off and pick up the work. Displays will last two to three weeks and must be arranged in advance with Theresa Salmon, SPS Logistics Project Administrator at tsalmon@seattleschools.org.

School Public Art Projects Need District Review

Any projects in which art is installed within the inside or outside of school facilities and which is done by someone other than Seattle Public School staff, such as by an artist-in-residence or by parent volunteers, needs to be reviewed and approved by The Self Help Program of the SPS Facilities Departments. For questions regarding project guidelines, contact Gretchen DeDecker, Senior Facilities Planner at gdedecker@seattleschools.org and visit http://www.seattleschools.org/area/facilities/SelfHelp/selfhelp.htm.
If you are school staff or community member who wants to work with a community arts organization that leads student public art projects to improve school facilities, please contact Kathleen Allen, SPS Community Arts Liaison kpallen@seattleschools.org.

ACT's annual Young Playwrights Festival (YPF) returns March 19 through 21 for a seventh year, and features a stunning mix of dramatic and comedic new works from extraordinarily talented student writers ages 14 to 18.

ACT will present staged readings of eight new plays developed through ACT's Young Playwrights Program (YPP). This program serves upwards of 350 middle and high school students from King, Kitsap, and Pierce counties throughout 16 greater Seattle-area schools. And for the first time, ACT's YPF will include students attending the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center's afterschool YPP program. Plays were selected by an artistic panel, within ACT, from a pool of approximately 300 submitted works. To prepare for the staged readings, each student playwright is partnered with a professional director, dramaturge, and actors. They participate in nearly 20 hours of rehearsal with his or her creative team. Each program is performed twice during the three-day festival.

Music of Remembrance's mission is to remember Holocaust musicians and their art. In this program, Seattle native Daniel Asia and New Yorker Steve Reich share the bill. Using the poetry of Paul Pines, Asia's song cycle is imbued with images of family and Judaism, and their intertwining. Reich's landmark work juxtaposes sounds of the American trains he safely rode as a privileged child with images of the German trains that transported helpless people to death camps during the same years.

Writers are always saving things, changing things. We write on behalf of things that can't speak -- animals facing extinction, trees being cut down. We record events so that they won't be forgotten -- a city destroyed by a hurricane, a grandparent's life story. In this class we'll practice our powers of persuasion, putting our passion on the page to save, to remember and to create our world.

Performance Anxiety from Inside Out

This class is for those who wish to increase their ability to focus under pressure and for those with performance anxiety. After establishing confidentiality, Helen will help you identify the personal experiences, feelings, and thoughts that act as barriers and inhibit your ability to concentrate and perform optimally. Then she'll introduce appropriate tools to overcome these barriers. Many musicians are blocked from sharing the music in their souls. Others perform well but needlessly berate themselves for perceived flaws or failures. You will learn appropriate tools to overcome these barriers, highly effective approaches used in other fields to minimize stress and prepare for athletic competition. Regardless of the reason that you seek greater freedom on stage, Helen is passionate about the opportunity to help you conquer your fears and let your music soar. Helen's classes are rich with transformative, life-changing moments and can be described as deeply personal as well as full of laughter. Helen offers the chance for participants to interact, learn concepts from great teachers, and discover other ways to focus the mind, emotions, and body. As one former participant wrote, "I enjoy a level of performance satisfaction I never knew possible."

The residencies are woven into the school day, thus reaching students who might never elect to attend an after-school program in creative writing. Through WITS, students become authors of their own lives.
