Join us for a week-long exploration of marine ecosystems and creative self-expression at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Washington, on the Strait of Juan de Fuca!

Water World, a collaboration between Centrum and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, features activities and projects that expand and enhance elementary students' experience of the marine world through both scientific and artistic lenses.

What do Woodstock, the mambo and the 1970s Los Angeles punk scene have in common? They are all found in the new distance learning course based on the exhibition "American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music". This course, which incorporates music, video and interactive elements, will help teachers learn about the ways Latino musicians have adopted and adapted musical styles, both Latino and mainstream. Teachers can choose among seven modules to design the instruction that best suits their interests. The course also includes classroom ideas and resources, particularly for teachers of music, Spanish and social studies. Up to 27 clock hours are available to Washington state teachers.

Music of Remembrance's mission is to remember Holocaust musicians and their art. In this program, Seattle native Daniel Asia and New Yorker Steve Reich share the bill. Using the poetry of Paul Pines, Asia's song cycle is imbued with images of family and Judaism, and their intertwining. Reich's landmark work juxtaposes sounds of the American trains he safely rode as a privileged child with images of the German trains that transported helpless people to death camps during the same years.

Scribes is an intensive two-week writing program for students having just completed 7th and 8th grades. Seattle Music Partners provides after-school music lessons to elementary and middle school students in underserved communities. Our mission is to help children learn to play instruments and read music. To attain this goal, we recruit accomplished high school and college-aged musicians to volunteer to work with our students. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis in one-on-one pairings or in small groups, and instruments are loaned when needed. Students perform in several recitals each year, showcasing their new skills and gaining valuable performance experience. In addition, SMP works with area arts organizations to bring nationally known musicians into the schools and to arrange for field trips to music performances.

NFFTY (pronounced nifty) showcases work by filmmakers 22 and under from across the U.S. and the world. Centrum's programs provide young artists the variety and depth of experience in the arts needed to meet today's learning objectives. Centrum provides a completely hands-on experience outside the traditional classroom.

The model for our elementary and middle school programs is to have artists and scientists, engaged in the most current cultural issues of our times, mentor young people in grades 5-8, as well as the teachers and adult chaperones who accompany them. Teachers who attend as chaperones receive 30 clock hours for a week-long program. Students in grades 9-12 come to Centrum without chaperones.

Centrum is a non-profit, artist-centered organization with a 35-year partnership with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

Pacific Northwest Ballet's DanceChance program strives to partner with elementary schools to discover talented students. Third graders who display the physical ability to become professional dancers are provided with free classical ballet training, allowing them the opportunity they might otherwise not have to pursue a professional career. Selected students receive full tuition scholarships, transportation, dance attire and tickets to PNB performances. DanceChance strives to enhance children's confidence, discipline and sense of achievement through classical ballet training.



Partner schools are selected based on their percentage of students on subsidized lunches, ethnic diversity, and commitment level of the school. Applications for schools interested in partnering for the 2009-2010 program are due on May 1, 2009

Writers in the Schools (WITS), a program of Seattle Arts & Lectures inspires young people to discover and develop their authentic writing and performance voices. Through working with professional, published creative writers, students are empowered to tell their own stories. Writers-in-residence provide a meaningful real-life mentor for every student from the motivated learner to the reluctant writer and for each teacher. The residencies are woven into the school day, thus reaching students who might never elect to attend an after-school program in creative writing. In this play for school assemblies about bullying prevention, students will follow along with Alexander, a 5th grader who imagines he's a medieval knight who has to rescue a princess from a dragon. While he's battling make-believe foes, he and the students learn some important lessons about bullying prevention and social skills along the way. This play was guided by Committee for Children's curriculum on bullying prevention.

A new musical exploring the story of the Mercer Girls who were recruited by University of Washington President Asa Shinn Mercer and sailed to the Puget Sound area from the East Coast to work as teachers and to increase the population of women in the Washington Territory. The women were full of hope and aspiration, but life in the new city was often difficult. This original musical follows the journey of the Mercer Girls and their experiences in the fast growing town of Seattle.

Music of Remembrance presents the world premiere of a new commission from Betty Olivero, "Kolo't" (Voices) a work that gives musical witness through poems and texts by Primo Levi and Paul Celan. Spectrum Dance Theater's Donald Byrd has choreographed a new dance for "The Wind," a captivating work by Franz Schreker, one of the composers banned by the Nazis. We also celebrate Cosmic Spring, written in the Kovno Ghetto by little-known German composer Edwin Geist, who was shot to death by the Gestapo in 1942.

The award-winning Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra SRJO presents another of its highly popular "Jazz4Kids Concerts" in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. The SRJO's Jazz4Kids Concerts are one-hour matinee performances in fine concert halls. These concerts include a hands-on instrument display, instrument demonstrations, and questions from the audience for artistic directors Clarence Acox and Michael Brockman.

Tickets for the Jazz4Kids concert are provided free to all kids, high school age and younger, plus any parents, grandparents, teachers, or youth group leaders accompanying them. Ticket blocks are also available to schools and community youth groups. While all tickets are provided at no charge, it is highly recommended that everyone interested obtain tickets in advance to ensure seating.
