Finding the Right Program for You

Listings of programs, events and activities in the Arts eNews does not equate to an endorsement by the Seattle Public Schools. We encourage all potential program participants to assess how each listing meets their needs, especially when establishing long term partnerships. If you would like assistance in matching right program for your school's needs, please feel to contact Community Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen kpallen@seattleschools.org. The listings below are submitted to SPS by the arts organizations and any questions about the programs, events or activities should be addressed directly to the organizations.

Each month we also feature a partnership between an arts organization and a school or schools that exemplifies a collaborative and sustained effort to enhance student and educator learning in the arts. This month, we highlight a partnership currently in the planning phases which integrates arts and literacy curricula at the elementary level through teacher training.

Featured Partnership
Arts Impact Teacher Training, Arts as Literacy

Arts Impact and Seattle Public Schools have received a 3-year, U.S. Dept. of Education (DoEd) Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) grant. Teacher Training, Arts as Literacy (TTAL) trains K-5 grade level teams and district literacy coaches from high poverty elementary schools which have limited access to the arts. Teachers will learn how to infuse dance, theater and visual arts with literacy, tapping into the natural connections between literacy and the arts that go beyond content into cognitive processes. These processes, such as generating ideas and critical analysis, are common to all disciplines and essential to student academic achievement.

Participating teachers will attend a weeklong Summer Institute at the Seattle Art Museum. During the school year, teachers will be mentored by professional teaching artists. Teachers and their students will also attend an exhibition or a dance or theater performance at one of five partnering cultural organizations: Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Children's Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and University of Washington World Series. By the end of the project, a curriculum will be developed in collaboration with Seattle Public Schools arts and literacy staff. Additionally, the project will be a district model for integrating the arts into the classroom and strategically addressing inequities in arts education.

About Arts Impact
Since 1999, Arts Impact has provided comprehensive professional development in the arts to elementary classroom teachers in Pierce and King Counties. As of 2008, over 393 teachers from Pierce and King County schools have been trained, increasing arts education experiences for approximately 46,535 students.

Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) grants are one of two Arts in Education grant programs offered by DoEd. Arts Impact has also received three DoEd Arts Education Model Development and Dissemination grants (2002, 2006, 2008) over the past six years. This brings the total number of DoEd grants received to four, the most received by any arts education program in the nation. Arts Impact was also selected as one of three arts education models nationally to be featured in a DoEd case study focused on programs with promising practices that can be implemented in other locations.
