Seattle Public Schools Half A Century Ago

Remembering the War

Some of the most significant events of this period were clearly war-related. The Seattle Public Schools honored the many war-dead through two public memorials. Cleveland High School students purchased 131 acres near Issaquah, Cleveland Memorial Forest - a vital part of the District's Environmental Education Program to this day.

The newly erected sports stadium on lower Queen Anne was similarly dedicated with a wall of names of those Seattle Public School students who died in World War II and named it Seattle High School Memorial Stadium. Seven hundred names were eventually inscribed on a student-designed wall at the East end of the stadium.
