Seattle Public Schools
Advanced Learning Student Services offers three programs designed
to meet the needs of advanced learners in Kindergarten, elementary
school, and middle school. These programs address the unique
learning profiles of these students by providing a deeper and
broader exploration of rigorous and provocative curricular content,
engagement with higher order thinking skills (for example,
analysis, synthesis), and acceleration where appropriate. There is
an emphasis on depth of understanding, critical/abstract thinking,
inquiry, and creative and novel problem solving.
Accelerated
Progress Program (APP)
APP is offered at Lowell Elementary and Washington Middle School. The program is
structured around self-contained classes. APP serves students who
are able to work at a significantly accelerated
learning pace, at standards that are significantly
above their grade level, and at an advanced level
of complexity and depth.
Spectrum
Spectrum programs are offered at a number of the elementary and
middle schools across the district. Spectrum classes are
self-contained in design and provide self-contained experiences to
the degree supported by student enrollment. Spectrum serves
students who learn at an accelerated pace in comparison to general
education peers, who are working with grade level and above
standards, and who are able to work with complex ideas and
concepts.
Advanced
Learning Opportunities (ALO)
ALO programs are offered at a number of the elementary and middle
schools across the district. ALO program models vary by building
and offer rigor and challenge to meet the needs of advanced
learning students.
