Essential Learning 1: ACTIVE LIFESTYLES - The student acquires knowledge and skills necessary to maintain an active life: movement, creativity, physical education and nutrition.

To meet this standard, the student will:

1.1 Develop fundamental and complex movement skills as developmentally appropriate

identify and predict the effects of nutrition on body functions and performance, setting personal nutrition goals for a healthy diet

explain the importance of movement, fitness, and nutrition and the negative impact of sedentary activities like TV and computer games

Essential Leaning 2: HEALTH SKILLS - The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy life: recognizing patterns of growth and development, reduce health risks, and live safely.

To meet this standard, the student will:

2.1 Recognize patterns of growth and development

identify the reproductive system and the changes of puberty, including hygiene, making friends, crushes, family stages of life, death and dying

describe the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social changes that occur during puberty

describe the reproductive system, including pregnancy, abstinence, contraception, STD's

complete a family genetic profile of physical characteristics

identify hereditary factors that affect growth, development, and health

research specific hereditary traits and conditions, explaining any short or long-term consequences

explain the importance of proper nutrition, daily fitness activities, and rest for body performance

describe how nutrition, exercise, and rest influence physical growth

develop a personal action plan with personal, social, and cultural attitudes and values regarding nutrition and fitness

2.2 Understand the concepts of control and prevention of disease

review personal and health care practices that keep people healthy

identify the differences between communicable and non-communicable diseases

describe personal and health care practices that result in early detection, treatment, and monitoring of non-communicable diseases

review community strategies to prevent and control non-communicable disease

review personal and health care practices that help prevent communicable diseases

2.3 Acquire skills to live safely and reduce health risks

identify safe/healthy home and recreational practices, including being home alone and baby-sitting

anticipate abuse and risky situations and practice safe behaviors to minimize risk and prevent injury to self and others at home, school, and in the community

create a potential personal safety plan to avoid risky and abusive situations at home and at school

analyze the physical consequences of being sexually active

identify abstinence as a choice

explain the adverse physical, emotional, and economic consequences of being sexually active, including STDs

consider self-responsibility associated with abstinence, sexual activity, and the avoidance of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases

identify emergency or crisis situations, and list actions that would help self and others

demonstrate skills that help self and others in an emergency or crisis

create a disaster preparedness plan for home and school

define harmful and helpful stress, including strategies to cope with stress

identify ways to use stress positively and develop short-term strategies to reduce harmful stress

generate a personal stress/anger management plan

explain risk/implications of use of inhalants, nicotine, alcohol

anticipate situations which involve pressure to use/abuse legal or illegal drugs and plan how to reduce drug risks

explore personal & social attitudes/values regarding drugs/alcohol/nicotine and develop a personal action plan which anticipates present and future challenges to attitudes/values


Essential Learning 3: INFLUENCING FACTORS - The student analyzes and evaluates the impact of real-life influences on health.

3.1 Understand how environmental factors affect one's health (e.g. air, water, noise, chemicals)

identify major environmental factors, including population, recycling, air/water, carcinogens

describe the influence of environmental factors that positively and negatively affect health - personal & public

implement a school-based or community-based environmental service learning program

3.2 Gather and analyze health information

identify major health care products used at school and at home

distinguish between safe and unsafe use of effective health-care products

research laws and policies that govern health related products (EPA, FDA); interpret and explain health product labels

identify key influences on health related decision making; practice decision making skills and refusal skills with healthy and unhealthy messages

identify ways people encourage healthy and unhealthy decision making, plan how to resist unhealthy messages and create healthy messages

describe the influence of media/advertising on health related decision making

3.3 Use social skills to promote health and safety in a variety of situations

recognize dangerous/unhealthy situations, and the role of communications in resolving conflicts

express opinions and resolve conflicts constructively while maintaining safe and respectful relationships

recognize and respect similarities and differences among peers, maintaining safe and respectful relationships

practice refusal skills and assertiveness skills

identify a variety of social skills to avoid risky situations

demonstrate appreciation for diversity, and express empathy

3.4 Understand how emotions influence decision making

effectively use language/vocabulary of feelings, and describe the impact of puberty on emotions

describe how emotions may influence decision making and develop strategies about how to act in emotional situations

describe the relationship of values and emotions in decision making, and practice effective decision making skills


Essential Learning 4: HEALTH AND FITNESS PLANNING - The student effectively analyzes health and safety information to develop health and fitness plans based on life goals.
