Investing in
Educational Excellence for the Children of Seattle
Seattle Public
Schools’ vision is that every student, regardless of race,
ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic background – will graduate
and be fully prepared to lead a successful life. To make this
vision a reality, the district must realign its scare resources to
maximize investments in educational excellence
In
July 2005, Superintendent Raj Manhas appointed the Community
Advisory Committee on Investing for Educational Excellence (CACIEE), to provide
recommendations on establishing short- and long-term fiscal
stability in support of academic achievement. A Strategic Implementation
Team is acting on items contained in the committee’s
final report, and ensuring that action steps align with the
District’s Five-Year Plan and Academic Action
Plan.
School
Consolidation and Closure – Superintendent’s
Recommendation
In
January 2006, the School Board initiated a seven-month process
to review school programs and facilities. The importance of
shifting resources from excess facility capacity to academics was
underscored by the CACIEE.
On
July 5, the Superintendent announced his final recommendations on
school consolidation and closure. The recommendation is provided in
a detailed report that includes a statement of academic vision;
background on the school consolidation and closure process; and
details of each school or program included in the recommendation. A
brief summary of the recommendation, which includes only specific
building and program closures and program moves and mergers, is
also available.
